Yoga for Teens
Teenagers benefit from Yoga more than younger children,
especially girls who are starting to weight watch. The combination of breathing, posture work and relaxation techniques can help a kid gain self-confidence and come to terms with physical and mental changes.
Yoga is a non competitive way for overweight teens to get in shape and lose weight, new research shows. More than just ridicule, teenage obesity can lead to increased risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other serious health disorders.
Overweight adolescents face even more criticism and humiliation than overweight adults. Between their parents, peers, teachers, and the public, teens are constantly reminded of their struggles with weight. Yoga shifts the focus from the look of the body to the feel of the body, thus creating more mindful eating rather than mindless eating.
The Pranayama breathing exercises uses abdominal muscles with very little effort but gives you a great “high”. Some poses stimulate glands, effect metabolism and regulate hormones. It’s been great seeing moms and daughters do Yoga together. I recommend it.
